Khiri quarry : Brownfield Reclamation project

Nowadays natural resources are being used to achieve world development, especially in the mining industry, causing the site to lose its identity. If human beings are not aware of the exhaustion of natural resources, we will confront negative effects in the future. The objective of this project is to make people aware of this problem. Therefore, we are willing to achieve this goal by supporting the visitors to visit the mining site by offering adventurous activities and reclamation learning to let them be aware of the effects on the site.

Remediation phasing is divided into 3 phases. The first area is started to gradually restore in the area that already done the mine concession. With the aim to recover this quarry as rapidly as it can, planting pioneer plants are the main technique for restoring the soil. Moreover, the laboratory is planted to discover and do an experiment about mining restoration techniques. With five years of recovering, the second area is ready for another step in environmental restoration. Mainly focusing on the land structures, building soil layers, and reducing soil erosion are applied to all ruin areas. Starting to build all infrastructures such as museums and modifying the mining process area invites visitors tours on how important nature is. After the progress of stable reclamation has been confirmed, the last area is opened for the aims to conserve an ecosystem in the quarry, maintaining the standards in every area. The design demonstrates the potential of landscape intervention that can restore the environment, improve biodiversity and raise awareness about environment conservation.

Entering the Khiri learning and research center, the first impression would be the SCG learning center that has the future technology system to educate visitors with suitable gadget types. Moreover, this area provides vary of accommodation stuff to serve human needs comfortably. Cliff walk and outdoor rock garden are situated along the quarry, which gives the whole environment sublime and elegant.

To study the way of mining reclamation, you have to walk through the cliff walk and enter the research center, the center that researches plant species that can recover soil structure and improve the quality of the soil where can be found in a nursery area. Besides the laboratory, learning in an outdoor classroom must be more effective. Continue studying along the reclamation route, the first station represents how to deal with soil and rock erosion by using bioengineering. Leading to the second station that the soil has been recovered, this station exhibits bioremediation especially phytoremediation to be ready for the primary forest stage.

Leading to the climax of this area, the observation tower with a 15-meter height provides a panoramic view of all quarry remediation techniques. Seeing that along the path goes a story, which the stop stations split into five chapters of different sequences of landscapes offering varied universes and highlighting remarkable sites. Unusual elements punctuate the way, aiming at awakening the visitor’s senses. Afterward, the results of reclamation are represented by different biodiversities creating a place for living creatures to settle their habitats.

As the aims to let visitors be aware of the quarry effects, the mining process exhibition has been located inside the real quarry and has lots of information to learn. The process has shown respectively from pre-blasting to after blasting stage, creating a sublime and formidable feeling. To preserve the environment, we should start by ourselves not to use exhaustible natural resources and educate other people how severe the mining make. As a consequence, this learning and research center would like to be the place to distribute intention to conserve the ecosystem. In the end, not only do we return the forest to the world but also raise awareness among generations about environmental conservation.
